The seminar guides students through the basics of linguistic research methodology (gathering the linguistic data, different language tools, quantitative and qualitative analysis, interpretation of results).
The course covers a variety of topics from English linguistics in the frame of different contemporary theoretical approaches. The topics that are covered during the course include: noun phrase (e.g., the use of articles, word-formation processes, Saxon-genitive); verb phrase (e.g., aspect, delexicalised verbs); adjectival, adverbial and prepositional phrase; punctuation; sentence analysis; semantic roles (theta-roles); logical operators, functional sentence perspective; linguistic variation; set expressions; corpus analysis, etc.
The seminar work helps students develop and acquire the competences to use methods of scientific research and the ability to analyse and synthesise.
