1. Music in Ancient Greece and Rome:
- Music in the life of ancient Greece.
- Ancient harmonic theory.
- Ancient philosophy of music.
- Basic characteristics of ancient melodies.
- Historical overview of ancient Greek music.
- Music in ancient Rome.

2. Medieval liturgical monophony:
- The emergence of medieval liturgical repertoires and Gregorian chant.
- Chant forms: functions and musical characteristics.
- Gregorian chant to the Council of Trent.

3. Development of medieval polyphony:
- Early polyphony (organum).
- Notre Dame polyphony and early motet.
- Troubadours, trouvers, Minnesängers.
- French ars nova and Italian polyphony in the 14th c.
- Ars subtilior.
- English Medieval Polyphony

4. Music of the 15th and 16th centuries:
- Franco-Flemish polyphony.
- Josquin and contemporaries.
- Music of European countries in the second half of the 15th and the first half of the 16th century.
- 16th century poliphony.
- Palestrina, Lasso.
- Madrigal in the 16th century.
- Instrumental music in the 16th century.

Tutorial includes 5 hours of field work in the form of attending an excursion and concerts.
