The course examines cultural and social phenomena related to dying, death, funeral, mourning / bereavement and the dead. Covered are the subjects: dying and death as a social phenomenon; the cultural history of death; attitudes towards dying and death throughout history; death and emotions; medicalization of death; models of mourning; death rituals and their role in the community in the context of social change; death, notions of the afterlife and religion; dead body and material aspects of death; mass death and mass graves; the dead as vehicles of social memory and their social role; the relationship between the living and the dead; communication with the dead; death and the dead in popular culture.
