Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andrej Stopar

Andrej Stopar holds a BA in English Teaching (2001), a BA in Sinology (2001), an MA in Modern English Language (2004), and a PhD in Linguistics (2006), all obtained from the University of Ljubljana (UL). He has also received additional training at institutions such as the London Metropolitan University, Lancaster University, Norwich Institute for Language Education, and University College London.

Since 2002, he has been associated with the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana, initially as a Junior Researcher, subsequently as a Lecturer, and, currently, an Associate Professor. He has taught various courses focusing in English linguistics, including Discourse Intonation, Language and Culture, Translation (into English/into Slovenian), Introduction to Lexicology, and Introduction to General Linguistics. He has (co-)authored a textbook and other teaching materials and regularly supervises student theses. From 2017 to 2019, he served as a guest lecturer at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria. 

Andrej Stopar's research interests span several areas within linguistics: contrastive linguistics (with a focus on phonetics, phonology, translation, and syntax), language and culture, discourse (including intonation and text analysis), applied linguistics (language testing), as well as corpus studies and lexicology. He led a bilateral project with the US and is has been a member of several research project and programme groups, including the programme group Theoretical and Applied Linguistic Research. He regularly presents at academic events across different countries, including the UK, Ireland, Czechia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Slovenia.

In terms of professional and administrative activities, Andrej Stopar has held several significant roles. He served as the Head of the Department of English from 2018 to 2020, contributed as a (co-)editor for publications such as ELOPE and Linguistica, and led the National Testing Committee for the Vocational Matura in English from 2008 to 2020. Additionally, he was a member of the National Committee for the Vocational Matura (2008-2012) and Vice-Head of the National Committee for the Vocational Matura (2012-2020). He has also been involved in organizing international academic events (such as SDAŠ, SinFonIJA, MMM, and BICLCE) and has conducted teacher training seminars at the Centre for Pedagogical Education within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana.
